Originally designed by Croatian architect and artist Vjenceslav Richter for the Yugoslav Pavilion at Expo 58 in Brussels, the chair reflects Richter’s belief that architecture, art, and furniture could belong to one continuous creative language.

Its character comes from a carefully exposed structure rather than decorative excess. An orthogonal tubular steel frame establishes a crisp architectural outline, while sculpted wooden seat, backrest, and arm elements soften the geometry with natural warmth and tactile comfort. Beneath the seat, a distinctive X-shaped connection becomes both a structural detail and a defining visual signature.

The result is a modern lounge chair with an intriguing sense of tension: rational yet inviting, graphic yet comfortable, substantial yet visually light. Curved wooden surfaces sit almost suspended within the slender metal framework, giving the chair a sculptural presence from every angle.

Reintroduced and refined by Richter+ in collaboration with Prostoria, the contemporary VR58 preserves the architectural logic of Richter’s original design while introducing updated proportions, construction, and ergonomics for modern use.

With its distinctive mix of wood and steel, the VR58 works beautifully in design-forward living rooms, hotel lounges, reception spaces, private offices, and hospitality interiors. It is an especially compelling choice for projects seeking a modern lounge chair with genuine design history rather than another interpretation of mid-century style.

Product dimensions

VR58 Lounge Chair
width 30 1/4″ × depth 23 2/4″ x height 28″ x seat height 16 1/4″

View PDF in a New Tab

Product brochure

View PDF in a New Tab

Availability

Prostoria Richter VR Collection is made to order with an 8 to 10-week lead time.

Richter VR58 Lounge Chair

Design Vjenceslav Richter
Manufactured by Prostoria

The Richter VR58 Lounge Chair brings an important piece of mid-century European design into the contemporary interior. Surprisingly Easygoing.
The VR58 knows exactly where every line belongs.
Steel draws the architecture. Wood brings the warmth. And that unmistakable X beneath the seat quietly holds the whole composition together.
Designed by Vjenceslav Richter for Expo 58 and revived for contemporary interiors, VR58 has the confidence of a design classic without behaving like a museum piece. Its crisp framework gives it graphic presence, while the curved wooden seat, back, and arms make all that geometry considerably more welcoming.
From across the room, it looks like architecture.
Up close, it feels like craftsmanship.
Sit down, and thankfully, it remembers it is a chair.
VR58: structure with nothing to hide.

HIGHLIGHTS

Architectural Steel Frame

Slender tubular steel creates a precise, visually light structure with a distinctive geometric presence.

Sculpted Wood Comfort

The curved wooden seat, backrest, and armrests soften the rigorous frame, adding warmth and tactile comfort.

Iconic X-Brace Detail

The exposed X-shaped connection beneath the seat becomes both a structural solution and the chair’s defining signature.

CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS

MATERIALS AND FINISHES

Select the wood panels finish from the ‘solid wood & plywood’ color pages.

Select the base color from the metal colors page.

View PDF in a New Tab

Select the wood panels finish from the ‘solid wood & plywood’ color pages.

Select the base color from the metal colors page.

View PDF in a New Tab

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0008/9731/8948/files/Prostoria-Richter-VR58-Lounge-Chair_01.jpg?v=1792263388
